Sarah Main is a versatile artist with an unquenchable thirst for pushing the boundaries of creative expression, serving as a bridge between the past and the future. She combines physical painting with AR, Ai, music and virtual reality to create rich immersive narratives.
Her artistic journey began with a formal education in fine arts at Sydney University, followed by a diploma in interactive multimedia. Yet, it was her passion for music, manifesting through her passion for DJing, that propelled her to the epicentre of dance music, Ibiza, where she earned renown through her long-standing residency at the iconic Pacha.
In 2019, Sarah returned full time to her artistry as a painter. However, intensely curious by nature, she experimented with augmented reality and trained an AI model with a dataset of her works, starting a collaborative journey between humans and machines. She released her debut NFT digital art collection in 2021, which sold out within an hour.
Today, her current works serve as the culmination of her life's eclectic artistic journey, weaving together the threads of music, art, AR, animation, and AI into multi-dimensional projects that engage and break free from conventional confines.
Artist Statement
My current work is a visual diary of my search for sense in a nonsensical world.
While painting I contemplate themes related to humanity such as extinction, self-terminating behaviour and human conditioning. Although I reflect on sombre subjects, my work is imbued with optimism. It’s intended to be a celebration of what life is and what it can become.
It’s primarily driven by motherhood and the desire to protect life. I use the act of painting to allow my mind to explore ways in which we can affect positive change on a personal, community and global level.
In the viewer, I wish to awaken the inner child and evoke a sense of awe. I want to help foster the belief in a better tomorrow.
My subjects are whimsical characters, many gazing towards a specific reference point—a symbol of my darkest moments. When I align this point with my current life, the beauty I perceive is magnified. It's this profound experience that I consider a saving grace, and I wish for all to 'see the world in a grain of sand and heaven in a wildflower...'
The foundation of my work lies in a continuous line, symbolising the thread of our interconnectedness. I firmly believe that every action has a ripple effect, compelling us to consider and transform many aspects of our lives. To convey the urgency of change and transformation, I employ a vibrant colour palette, intuitively applying hues until they harmonise to mirror the perfection and beauty I see in the world around us.
